“If you’re passionate about the water (and everything in it) and want to make a positive difference while having fun, there can be few better places in the world to spend some time than in Mozambique.

"The programme is run by experienced marine biologists, and is involved in a number of different projects to benefit both the ocean and local communities. So whether you’re excited about heading out to tag sharks, passionate about improving your diving and helping monitor the health of the fish population, or more interested in building education programmes for the local villagers, there’s something there for you. Plus of course plenty of time for a cold beer on the terrace of the wonderful volunteer house, and sharing stories with other volunteers and the local team.

"The programme is not rigid like some volunteering programmes – it’s very much what you make of it – and as such is extremely flexible and accommodating. For me, improving my diving was the top priority, and I managed 10 wonderful dives and got to see turtles, oceanic mantas and even a juvenile hammerhead shark! No whale sharks this time, but that’s the beauty and frustration of the ocean – you never know what you’ll see on your next dive. It just means I’ll have to come back and try again!”
