Make waves of change through underwater adventures

When it comes to conservation efforts, much emphasis is placed on renowned land mammals, such as the Big 5. Perhaps because animals on land are more accessible, or because films have misrepresented underwater creatures such as sharks, relatively few people consider the incredible creatures found in the ocean.

Our Mozambique-based marine conservation project strives to create awareness around the majestic underwater kingdom around the Mozambique coast, by engaging volunteers with the conservation of aquatic animals, such as whales and sharks. Research has shown these species to be in need of significant support as the growing human population encroaches on their natural habitat. As the number of people increase, so does our need to use natural resources which leads to pollution, which in turn endangers our marine and coastal animals.

Based in Praia do Tofo in Southern Mozambique, our conservation project was founded by marine biologists who had previously spent a decade conducting marine research in Tofo’s serene waters.

Joining their established conservation effort lets you marry a love for the ocean and diving, with a volunteer experience that has real power.

Marine Conservation

The main objective of this marine programme is to gather information about whale sharks, manta rays, marine turtles and humpback whales which are all regular in season residents in the area. Biologists interpret this data, which then informs conservation strategies for these threatened species.

Volunteers will be in a team of no more than 10, for a self-chosen period of 2 – 20 weeks. No previous dive experience is required, as Open Water and Advanced Diving Certification can be included if required. Those enrolling for this programme with an existing Advanced Diving Certification will pay a discounted project fee.

Your time diving in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean, will be spent taking identification photos of marine megafauna, focusing on whale sharks and manta rays. Also checking acoustic listening stations, observing environmental conditions, studying plankton, tagging animals, taking tissue samples and measuring ocean giants. Of course, there will also be down time to connect with your fellow volunteers and enjoy the vibrant beauty of Africa.

Marine Conservation and Dive Master

This programme is for those who have a background in diving and would like to extend their expertise with a professional Dive Master course, and learn more about marine biology and ocean conservation.

During your volunteer programme, you will study manta rays and whale sharks up close; learn about endangered marine species, and support the permanent Marine Biologists with their studies of marine mammals, fishes and coral reefs.

Volunteers are required to stay for a minimum of 12 weeks, in order to fully contribute to the volunteer programme and complete their certification. After the programme, volunteers will be fully qualified to lead dives in any dive centre worldwide.

Humpback Whale Research

There is something haunting and mystical about whale song; it is as though these great mammals sing the secrets of the ocean. If you share our fascination, this programme is for you!

Join an internationally renowned Humpback Whale Marine Biologist to gather data on population numbers, behaviour studies, individual animal logging and identification, and pod structure. This programme offers incredible experiences with large numbers of whale sharks, dolphins, reef and giant manta rays and sea turtles, as well as humpbacks. It also provides an opportunity to witness the awesome spectacle of humpback whale migration through the Mozambique waters from July through September.

This is not a diving programme, but volunteers are welcome to spend some of their free time learning to dive or joining a local dive team. This is an optional extra – additional charges apply and must be paid locally. Humpback whale volunteers will also experience other activities such as estuary tours and snorkeling expeditions, depending on the whales and the boat’s schedule.
