Community Outreach in Victoria Falls - what will I be doing?

Volunteer at our new community programme in Victoria Falls!

We are proud to have partnered with Greenline Africa on a new volunteer programme just outside Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Greenline Africa is a registered Zimbabwean trust dedicated to funding and initiating community focused, long term projects in the rural area around Victoria Falls.

Their four pillars of Health, Education, Livelihoods and Biodiversity are the foundations of all their community activities, which support vulnerable individuals and communities. The Trust is focused on poverty alleviation work, and financially supports a number of local farmers and child-headed households.

What makes this project unique

Greenline Africa was started in 2013 to support rural communities in dire need of assistance around Victoria Falls town. Volunteers work on projects set up solely to benefit vulnerable people, with a goal to lift villages out of poverty and give communities the tools to succeed. What makes this volunteer programme unique is that volunteers are there to support the long term work that Greenline are doing, not just there to provide one-off assistance that stops when they leave.

What you’ll be doing

Volunteers help permanent Trust staff deliver livelihood development projects focused on income generation and skills training. You will be involved in grass-roots projects in the area, working alongside community leaders and school authorities. These include; food intervention programmes, school feeding projects, adult education and development, community conservation and agriculture projects (e.g. organic gardening and beekeeping), water aid and the delivery of healthcare programmes.

Find out about what projects you will be working on.

What makes this project ethical?

A key objective of Greenline Africa is to develop a sprit of volunteerism, encompassing both a local and international community. Volunteers work alongside communities, and accomplish tasks by working together, which encourages a sense of pride in team achievements. The Trust is a not-for-profit organisation, and relies on volunteers to ensure the continuation of its long-term building, education and environmental projects.

Greenline have an amazing record of results with their community projects, and pride themselves on their long term, strategic perspective; plus getting regular feedback from the community on changes and adaptations.

Meet the team

Charlene (Charlie) Hewat is a born and bred Zimbabwean, raised on a farm in rural Zimbabwe. In 1990 she founded Environment Africa, one of the first Africa-rooted organisations to respond to the combined needs of both African people and the environment, taking a holistic view of community conservation. Building on her experience there, she established Greenline Africa in 2013, seeing a grave need for specific community projects in the rural areas around Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls. Charlie is involved in the running of Greenline Africa’s projects in Zimbabwe and Zambia, and is an inspirational figure in the local community.

Your hosts at the project and volunteer co-ordinators are Gary and Dianne Jones, who live on site at the volunteer programme main house. They are passionate about the communities they are supporting and spend the majority of their time, whether with volunteers or not, in the communities monitoring the programmes which are being run.

Sign me up!

The project are looking for volunteers who are willing to invest their time in working with community members, to support their livelihood development and skills training programmes. While you do not need any specific experience, volunteers who bring specific transferable skills can always be put to great use. If you have skills in activities such as beekeeping, sewing and embroidery, organic gardening and agriculture, music, early childhood development / education or building (and related trades such as electricians, plasterers, bricklayers etc), we would absolutely love to hear from you, as those skills are particularly in demand and can be put to amazing use in the communities.

Special offer! If you book your project before 31st March 2019, you will be eligible for a 5% discount on the programme as a special introductory offer.

Watch now: volunteer, Justin, visited the programme in November 2018 and made this video of his time there.
