Horse Riding Internships - From Bush to Beaches

24 November 2016

Love horses? Combine two of our favourite programmes into one fantastic horse riding internship? Ride alongside rhinos and elephants in Zimbabwe and then live by the Indian Ocean as you train horses in Mozambique.

We think that one of the best ways to experience Africa and really immerse yourself in its wildlife and culture, is on the back of a horse. So if you love horses, are interested in wildlife and conservation and want to live by the beach and enjoy some of the best beach riding in the world, our Bush to Beaches horse riding volunteer programme is definitely going to appeal!

Horse Riding and Wildlife Conservation, Zimbabwe

This is the perfect volunteer project for animal lovers and horse riders, as you will combine horseback safaris, anti-poaching patrols and cattle ranching with hands-on volunteer work with endangered black rhinos and elephants.

Live and work in the heart of a 10,000 acre family-owned game park in the heart of Zimbabwe and get involved in a world-renowned black rhino breeding and release programme. With daily horse rides and hands on conservation work, this project is an absolute must for anyone who wants to combine horse riding with volunteer work.

You will explore the game park on horseback, undertake fence and boundary monitoring and join the dedicated anti-poaching team for full moon snare patrols. Camp out with your horse as you drive cattle around the game park and interact closely with wildlife, who not afraid or threatened by horses as they sometimes are by people or vehicles. You will experience the amazing animal sitings, enjoy the African bush and do essential volunteer work, all on horseback, as well as having the opportunity to interact closely with rhinos and elephants and monitor other wildlife on the reserve.

If you have a passion for wildlife, especially rhino and elephant and love to horse ride, this volunteer programme is definitely for you!

Horse Riding Internship, Mozambique

This is a perfect working holiday, set in one of the world’s finest beach riding destinations. Ride along untouched, white, sandy beaches and on stunning coastal trails, as you join horse safaris next to the clear turquoise seas of the Indian Ocean. This new horse riding volunteer programme enables interns to care for horses in Mozambique’s most exciting horse riding location and get involved in a well-establised, family-run riding school.

Interns will join the project's permanent staff and work alongside the family who own the programme, to help with the care, welfare and preparation of the 70+ resident horses and ponies. You will accompany lodge clients on beach, island and coastal rides, and be the programme's ambassador during these rides. Volunteers are responsible for the general well-being of all the horses and will exercise them daily, plus feed, groom and assist with health checks.

You will also get the opportunity to assist in the riding school, where visitors of all ages from around the world learn new horsemanship skills as well as take advantage of Mozambique's stunning riding trails.

You will also develop new riding skills, discover new cultures, help rescued horses live a better life, and experience some of the world's most stunning beach rides.
