The project location is stunning, with miles of deserted white sand beaches and surf.  However, what made this project really special was the warmth, generosity and enthusiasm of everyone involved and their willingness to pass on knowledge. Everyone made us feel at home very quickly.

Mozambique is an incredibly beautiful and relaxing place, blessed with amazing marine life and lovely people.  While diving and snorkelling, we saw whale sharks, giant mantas, at least 4 species of shark, turtles and stingrays and many other beautiful marine creatures, all while listening to the haunting songs of the humpback whales.  We sailed in the beautiful estuary on a hand made dhow and explored the underwater world of sea horses and tiny fishes.

The project gives volunteers an excellent range of activities combining both marine conservation and community outreach.  The diving was amazing, with an excellent, friendly, very safe and knowledgeable local dive outfit.  Some of the highlights included identifying and recording the mega fauna on scuba dives and while snorkelling; the humpback whale watching; and interesting and inspiring lectures on whale sharks, manta rays and marine conservation.  We also went on a beautiful snorkelling trip to the estuary on a hand crafted dhow to identify the health of the reefs.

On the community side, we visited the local pre-school to educate the young children about marine life, and took the children on beach cleanups, made giant sand dugongs (manatees) and played games to teach them about conserving the ocean. It was a privilege to spend time with the teachers - their energy and enthusiasm for an excellent outreach programme for the local children was infectious, and the children themselves were delightful and appeared to really enjoy and learn from the programme. Another highlight was a visit to a local village to understand about life in Mozambique and taste amazing home cooked food.

For anyone thinking about doing this project, just do it - you won’t regret it.
